Ear Training for Non-Majors I

This is the course where you train your ear and eye to actually hear music as structured information rather than just sound, turning notation, pitch, rhythm, and harmony into something you can read on sight and write down from listening. You'll spend the semester working through Waignein and Dandelot solfege exercises, singing one-part melodies in treble and later bass clef, and taking aural dictations on intervals, scales, and chords, with a midterm and final checking your fluency. As a first-semester requirement for non-majors, it builds the literacy you need before any harmony, composition, or performance course makes sense, since you can't analyze or play what you can't hear and notate.
