Instrumentation

Instrumentation is where you learn to think in terms of who plays what — translating musical ideas into idiomatic, playable parts for every section of the orchestra by understanding each instrument's range, timbre, mechanics, and notation conventions. You work through eight weekly scoring assignments that escalate from single-instrument writing toward full ensemble textures, culminating in a project that handles a choir, large wind ensemble, or orchestra, with Adler and Piston as your reference shelf alongside score study from the Classical and early Romantic literature. It's the practical bridge between knowing harmony and counterpoint on paper and actually producing scores that a conductor can rehearse — foundational for anything you'd later do in composition, arranging, or conducting coursework.
