Composition I

Composition I is where you stop analyzing other people's music and start writing your own, working from a single musical idea outward into a short solo-instrument piece that actually sounds like something. Weekly sessions move through linear materials, scales, modes, tone rows, motivic development, alongside close listening to Debussy, Varèse, Scelsi, and Sciarrino, but the real work happens in tutoring: you build a portfolio of at least five minutes of notated music and defend it before a jury. It's the entry point to the composition track, where notation discipline and idiomatic instrumental writing become the foundation everything else gets built on.
