Composition I is where you stop analyzing other people's music and start writing your own, working from a single musical idea outward into a short solo-instrument piece that actually sounds like something. Weekly sessions move through linear materials — scales, modes, tone rows, motivic development — alongside close listening to Debussy, Varèse, Scelsi, and Sciarrino, but the real work happens in tutoring: you build a portfolio of at least five minutes of notated music and defend it before a jury. It's the entry point to the composition track, where notation discipline and idiomatic instrumental writing become the foundation everything else gets built on.
