This is a research-driven seminar where you pick a single analytical question about a piece or repertoire and develop it across the semester into a full academic paper, rather than working through a fixed syllabus of topics. The rhythm is iterative: you cycle through sources lists, outlines, abstracts, and colloquium presentations, getting feedback at each stage before the final essay that determines your whole grade. It assumes you already have the tonal-analysis and music-history grounding to compare different analytical methods (Schenkerian, formal, stylistic) and tie structure to performance practice, so it functions as the capstone where you prove you can actually produce scholarship rather than just consume it.
