Visual Neuroscience

Vision is the most thoroughly mapped sensory system in neuroscience, and this course uses it as a lens for understanding how brains in general turn physical signals into perception and behavior — tracing the path from photoreceptors through retinal circuits, parallel cortical pathways, and top-down modulation by attention and internal states. You'll spend the semester reading recent primary literature, giving presentations, sitting two quizzes, and writing a final essay, with comparisons drawn across insects, mammals, and primates rather than clinical cases. It's a senior-level elective that rewards prior exposure to neuroscience or perception coursework and gives you the critical-reading skills needed for a thesis or graduate work in systems or cognitive neuroscience.

Hafta 1
Introduction to the course and visual neuroscience: Overview of the visual system. Updated Course Description: This course explores the visual system as a model for understanding complex brain functions and discusses methods used to unravel these functions. We will examine how the brains of different organisms processes visual information related to brightness, motion, depth, and color among others, and how this information is used to guide behavior and create perceptual experiences. The course combines lectures and literature seminars emphasizing the architecture and evolution of visual systems across animal species, particularly insects and mammals, including primates. The course will NOT go into depth about medical conditions. The course will focus on how visual systems are adapted to support survival in natural environments.
