ARCH 221 is where you stop drawing pretty buildings and start thinking about architecture as a language, how space, form, structure, and context combine to produce meaning and shape how people inhabit a place. Expect lectures paired with analytical exercises and a term project where you read and diagram real buildings, working through von Meiss and Simitch to build the vocabulary that lets you talk about why a wall, a threshold, or a courtyard does what it does. It runs alongside your second-year studios as the theoretical backbone, giving you the conceptual tools the studio critics will assume you already have.
