Visual Communication Design I

COMD 101 is where you learn to actually *see* — turning vague intuitions about what "looks good" into a working vocabulary of form, color, composition, balance, and Gestalt principles that you can defend and apply on demand. The semester runs as a studio: you'll spend most of your hours producing 2D pieces (geometric abstractions, advertisement analyses, opposing-sense visualizations) and defending them in critique, culminating in a multi-part final project. As the foundational studio for the Communication and Design track, it builds the visual literacy that everything downstream — typography, layout, digital media — assumes you already have.
