Media Studies I

Media Studies I is about learning to read media texts the way a literature student reads a novel — treating ads, films, and TV shows as objects with embedded meanings rather than just entertainment. You'll work through frameworks like semiotics, narrative theory, genre, and ideology (Hall, Chandler, Branston & Stafford), then apply them in a close-reading research project that culminates in a conference-style poster presentation. It's the first half of a two-semester sequence: this term grounds you in content analysis so that later courses on production, audiences, and industry have a critical vocabulary to build on.
