Experimental Film and Media - Theory and Practice

COMD 344 treats experimental film and media art as a way of thinking about the medium itself, what happens when you strip away narrative, genre, and convention and treat image, sound, and time as raw material. You'll move between two registers each week: studying figures like Vertov, Deren, Varda, Lynch, and glitch artists like Rosa Menkman, and then producing your own work through studio exercises (filming a dream, building a collage film, datamoshing) that culminate in a larger project. It's a useful counterweight to the more industry-oriented production and screenwriting courses in the COMD track, sharpening the critical and formal vocabulary you'll lean on whenever you're trying to make something that doesn't look like everything else.
