Experimental Film and Media - Theory and Practice

COMD 344 treats experimental film and media art as a way of thinking about the medium itself — what happens when you strip away narrative, genre, and convention and treat image, sound, and time as raw material. You'll move between two registers each week: studying figures like Vertov, Deren, Varda, Lynch, and glitch artists like Rosa Menkman, and then producing your own work through studio exercises (filming a dream, building a collage film, datamoshing) that culminate in a larger project. It's a useful counterweight to the more industry-oriented production and screenwriting courses in the COMD track, sharpening the critical and formal vocabulary you'll lean on whenever you're trying to make something that doesn't look like everything else.
