Media and Society

Media isn't just content you consume—it's an institution that shapes power, identity, and how society understands itself, and this course gives you the theoretical vocabulary to see that. You'll work through Croteau/Hoynes alongside readings on algorithms, networked privacy, post-truth politics, and mediatization, then put those frameworks to use in two essays plus a written final where you actually argue about cases rather than summarize them. As a third-year COMD core, it's where the production skills from earlier semesters meet critical theory: you stop asking how to make media and start asking what it does to us.
