Film theory asks what cinema actually *is* and how it produces meaning, pleasure, and ideology, you'll move from early formalist takes (Münsterberg, Soviet montage, Impressionism) through apparatus theory and psychoanalysis to auteurism, genre, national/transnational frameworks, and posthumanist and digital-era critiques. Weekly screenings happen on your own time, then class is discussion-driven; you're assessed on an essay, a project, a midterm, and a final, so the work is mostly writing and applying concepts to specific films rather than memorizing them. It pairs naturally with production courses in COMD by giving you the analytic vocabulary to argue *why* a film works, which is what later seminar-style and thesis work in the department leans on.
