Introduction to Art, Design and Culture II

FA 172 picks up where the fall semester left off, shifting from broad foundations to how art operates inside modern society, what modernism and postmodernism actually argued for, how institutions and mass media shape what counts as art, and how film, photography, and digital work fit into that lineage. You'll be reading theory, watching and discussing films in class, writing a report, and building toward a presentation where you apply these critical frames to visual material of your own choosing. It's the second half of the year-one art-and-culture sequence required across FADA, and the vocabulary you pick up here (the social function of art, the postmodern turn, media critique) is what later studio and history courses assume you already speak.
