Lettering and Introduction to Typography

Typography is the craft of giving language visual form, and this studio teaches you to see letters the way designers do — as drawn shapes with anatomy, history, and rhythm rather than transparent carriers of text. You'll spend the semester moving through seven hands-on projects, drawing letterforms with pen and brush before analyzing typeface classifications, testing legibility, and finishing with a self-promotional poster. As a Spring-semester first-year requirement, it builds the foundational vocabulary you'll lean on in every later layout, editorial, and identity course in the Graphic Design curriculum.
