Monumental Painting traces how the ancient Mediterranean covered its walls and floors with images, following frescoes and mosaics from Aegean Bronze Age palaces through Classical and Hellenistic Greece into Roman villas at Pompeii and Herculaneum. You'll move chronologically through key sites, learning the technical side of fresco and mosaic-making alongside iconography, with assessment built on a case study, presentations, two quizzes, and the usual midterm/final. It pairs well with the department's classical archaeology track, training you to read painted decoration as evidence for ritual, status, and daily life rather than just decoration.
