Anatolia II- The World of Hittites

A focused look at the Late Bronze Age power that ruled central Anatolia from roughly 1950 to 700 BCE, this course treats the Hittites less as a list of kings and battles and more as a civilization you reconstruct by triangulating archaeology, cuneiform texts, and material culture. You'll move between the political world — Qadesh, the Mycenaean and Egyptian correspondence, the so-called Bronze Age collapse — and the texture of daily life through readings, two homeworks, a research report, and a midterm/final. Building on your earlier Anatolian and Bronze Age coursework, it sharpens the source-criticism and bibliographic skills you'll lean on in any later seminar dealing with pre-Classical Near Eastern material.
