Instrument V

The fifth semester of one-on-one instrumental study, where the focus shifts from acquiring technique to using it expressively, reading a score not just accurately but with awareness of period, style, and the composer's intent. You meet weekly with your instructor, work through a progressively harder repertoire list, and are graded entirely on how you actually play: two practical midterms and a practical final, no written exams. By this point the mechanics should be largely under your fingers, so the real work is interpretive, making informed musical decisions and solving the technical problems that get in the way of them.
