Conducting I treats the baton as a precise communication tool: every gesture you make conveys tempo, dynamics, entrances, and expressive intent to an ensemble that can only follow what your body shows them. You'll spend most weeks on the podium yourself, drilling beating patterns, preparatory beats, cues, holds, and fermatas through choral works, chorales, madrigals, and plainchant, while also sight-playing scores at the piano and learning to analyze what you're about to lead. As the first half of the conducting sequence, it builds the physical vocabulary and score-reading habits you'll need before tackling more complex repertoire and rehearsal craft in Conducting II.

Course is split into two formats: - Lecture: Knowledge, analysis and presentation. - Individual Lesson: Curriculum and exercises on repertoire. Requirements to meet to take the final exam are: To have attended to and participated in lectures and individual lessons. To have completed weekly written and applied assignments. To have presented a an essay/paper. Having received passing grades from assignments, presentation as well as the Midterm Performance and Project Assessment.
