Evolutionary thinking has spawned several distinct schools within psychology and cognitive science, each with its own assumptions about which mental phenomena are best explained by selection pressures and ancestral environments, this elective is a critical tour of those schools rather than a defense of any one. You'll work through readings spanning comparative cognition and evolutionary psychology, moving week by week from perception and memory up to language, mate choice, emotion, and consciousness, with quizzes, individual work, and a report-plus-presentation as the main deliverables. It pairs well with cognition and biopsychology coursework, and its real value is teaching you to interrogate evolutionary claims, when they actually explain something versus when they're just-so stories dressed up as science.
