THR 101 builds the foundation of an actor's craft by training the body and mind to respond truthfully under imagined circumstances, working from Viola Spolin's theater-games tradition where presence, awareness, and spontaneity precede technique. Expect a studio-style lab: most weeks are spent on your feet doing concentration and sensory exercises, partner work, and short improvised scenes, with a journal you maintain throughout and self-evaluation papers due at the end. As the autumn-semester gateway for the Performing Arts program, it gives you the working vocabulary of objective, obstacle, and action that every later acting, scene study, and text-based course assumes you already inhabit.
