Introduction to Theatre History

THR 110 traces how theatre evolved as both an art form and a social practice across Western history, from Greek ritual origins through the experiments of the late 20th century. You'll read plays from each major period alongside Brockett's standard theatre-history text, then demonstrate that reading through a midterm, final, presentations, and regular homework. It's a foundational survey rather than a performance class, so the work is analytical, building the historical vocabulary and aesthetic sense that later acting, directing, and dramaturgy courses assume you already have.
