Materials behave the way they do because of how their atoms are arranged and bonded, and this course is essentially about learning to reason from that microscopic structure up to the macroscopic properties — strength, ductility, conductivity, thermal response — that decide whether a metal, ceramic, or polymer is fit for a given job. You'll work through stress-strain analyses, crystal-structure and defect calculations, diffusion problems, and phase diagrams (Fe-C in particular), tying chemistry-side bonding concepts to engineering-side performance. Sitting on top of GE 101/102 chemistry, it's the bridge course that makes later work in solid-state, polymers, and corrosion intelligible rather than memorized.
