Building on the chemistry foundations from CHEM 201, this course connects what a material *is* to how it actually gets made and what it can do — tracing how processing routes like heat treatment, casting, and powder pressing dictate the microstructure that ultimately governs strength, conductivity, and failure behavior. You'll work through phase transformation problems, analyze fracture and fatigue cases, and study how alloys, ceramics, polymers, and composites are tailored for real applications, with assessment built around two midterms, a final, quizzes, homework, and a presentation. It's the bridge between solid-state theory and materials engineering practice, giving chemistry students the vocabulary to design materials for things like fuel cells, superconductors, and optical devices rather than just describe them.
