Theory of Interpreting

CINT 501 steps back from the booth to ask what interpreting actually *is* as an object of study — how Interpreting Studies took shape as a discipline, and what cognitive science, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and discourse analysis have to say about what happens when a person renders meaning in real time. You'll read foundational work from the Pöchhacker reader and the John Benjamins volumes, give weekly presentations, and produce two midterm reports plus a final report tying research findings to your own practice. It's the theoretical backbone for the rest of the conference interpreting track, giving you the vocabulary and evidence base to reason about why certain techniques and training methods work — not just how to execute them.

Lecture on grounding in theory for interpreting. Discussion on the natüre of IS, its relationship to other disciplines, its evolution, IS as a discipline and structure of IS.
Hafta 3
Overview of interpreting in antiquity, breaking ground for interpreters in the 1950-70's, laying the foundations for the discipline in the 1970's, modelling the process, broadening the view, observing the product and its effects in 1990's, examining expectat,ons and norms, defining the role of the interpreter and looking ahead.

1st midterm exam andoral presentations.
Hafta 6
Explaining and exemplifying basic notions of studewnt autonomy in learning, peer and self assessment.
Hafta 7
Examples of self-training sessions and assessment of further training needs. Types of exercices for interpreting. Time allocation and management, resouce management and use. Discussion on skills and guidelines for exercices for interpreters.
Hafta 8
Prerecorded session with Barbara Moser's findings.
Hafta 9
Video session with Barbara Moser and the Whisperers.
Hafta 10
2nd midterm and oral presentations.
Hafta 11
Discussion of research findings that have a bearing on interpretation (sociolinguistic paradigms, communication theory, discourse studies etc.)
Hafta 12
Continuation of week 11
Hafta 13
Outline of grounding in theory and further reserach to be undertaken in self-study sessions.
Hafta 14
Final exam and oral presentations.
