EU and International Institutions

Students are familiarized with basic legal and economic notions and especially focus on understanding how EU institutions and international organizations operate to develop a know-how of institutional processes and procedures. They become familiar with specific terminology, registers, styles and discourses used in communication in the relevant settings.

Introduction to the course and overview of international institutions, focusing on institutional structures, decision-making processes and terminology development: Glossary project guidelines are introduced. Examination of NGOs and international governance structures with emphasis on institutional discourse and terminology extraction; 1st glossary submission. Analysis of Turkish governmental institutions and their communicative frameworks; 2nd glossary submission. Comparative study of regional organizations such as BSEC and OIC, focusing on procedural language and terminology management Study of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and legal institutional discourse. Analysis of UNICEF and WHO within humanitarian and public health communication contexts; 3rd glossary submission. Overview of the United Nations system and preparation for institutional assignment work Midterm 1 – Assignment Preparation, requiring submission of structured institutional research and terminology documentation Examination of the Turkish Parliament and international parliamentary structures with emphasis on procedural discourse; 4th glossary submission Study of EU institutions and institutional communication practices; Midterm 2 – Mock Conference simulation. Analysis of the World Bank and IMF, focusing on economic and financial institutional discourse Study of NATO and security-related institutional terminology. Examination of TİKA and development agency communication; preparation for final simulation; 5th glossary submission. Final Assessment – Mock Conference simulation evaluating institutional preparation, terminology use and discourse management.
