Introduction to Painting I

A studio elective for non-FA majors that treats painting as a way of seeing as much as a way of making, building up from the color wheel and basic acrylic handling to the harder problem of translating a three-dimensional scene onto a flat surface. You'll spend most weeks at an easel working through structured exercises — monochrome still lifes, edge and temperature studies, glaze and impasto experiments, and eventually a session with a live model — and leave with a portfolio you critique yourself. There are no prerequisites and nothing in the curriculum builds on it; the payoff is a trained eye and a steadier hand that quietly carry over into anything visual you do afterward.
