Introduction to Painting II

A studio elective for non-FA majors that builds on the basics of mark-making to focus on seeing — how light, color temperature, edge, and contrast translate a three-dimensional setup into a coherent two-dimensional surface in acrylic. Most weeks revolve around still-life problems painted from observation, paired with analysis of a chosen master work, and the back half of the term shifts into an individual project where new techniques are layered in through weekly demos. The goal isn't to cover topics but to train the eye and hand together, so expect to spend real studio hours mixing color and rebuilding the same composition until it reads.

Set up colour arrangement of objects with hard edges and very high contrasts - all to be transformed from a nature onto canvas

Analysing soft and hard edges, warm and cool colours, still and vibrating surface, low and high contrast - all to be transformed from a nature onto canvas

Set up a simple monochrome arrangement of a metal can or two on a neutral background. Use objects that do not have a lot of value contrast. Try to set things up so that edges of one object disappear against an object behind.

Analysis of chosen master painting.

Students will continue with their individual projects. During the course of remaining weeks, at least one new concept or technique will be presented each week with demos and exercises given as appropriate.
