Singing Voice I is where you start treating your voice as a professional instrument rather than just something you sing with, building the technical discipline and interpretive judgment that serious vocal performance demands. You'll work through a progressively assigned repertoire over the semester, learning each piece in depth — its composer, period, harmonic and rhythmic structure, phrasing, articulation — and being assessed almost entirely through practical performance juries (three midterms plus a final). It's a foundational studio course, so the habits you form here — how you practice, diagnose technical problems, and internalize a score — carry directly into every subsequent vocal and ensemble course in the degree.
