Introduction to Simultaneous Interpretation

This is where you actually get into the booth and start doing simultaneous interpreting, building up from the underlying cognitive skills, active listening, shared attention, short-term memory, shadowing, before moving on to summarization, reformulation, and finally sustained SI from your B/C languages into your A. Most of your time is spent in the lab: graded lab exams and quizzes drive assessment, and the semester culminates in a mock conference where you handle longer speeches end-to-end. It's the practical bridge between earlier consecutive and translation coursework and the more advanced SI and conference-interpreting courses that follow, and it's where you first confront cognitive overload and learn the compensation strategies that define professional booth work.
