CS 101 is your first real introduction to thinking like a programmer: taking a vague problem, breaking it into precise steps, and expressing those steps in Java so a machine can execute them. You'll spend the semester writing code in weekly labs, working through homework and quizzes, and gradually moving from basic control flow and arrays into designing your own classes with inheritance and polymorphism. Everything in the CS curriculum — CS 102, data structures, systems — assumes you're fluent in the habits you build here, so the goal isn't memorizing Java syntax but learning to decompose problems and reason about code you wrote two weeks ago.

Students will receive an FZ grade unless they have: 1) a minimum of 40% on the midterm AND 2) a minimum of 65% in the labs AND 3) a minimum of 51% for the homework assignments.
